** Special Miis Update **

For update on Nintendo's official use of Special Miis (Celebrity Miis) See Speculation section at bottom.

Overview

This should try to explain how Mii's with different coloured pants can be created through an explanation of the Mii ID.

New: Mii Pants Editor Program!

Now you don't need to know how to edit a Mii file! All you need is the Mii Pants Editor Program to convert old mii's into special gold miis with gold trousers.

Mii ID's

Before we start you need to understand how to change the Miis ID, or how to create Special Miis with a specific ID. The basic format of the Mii ID is a hexadecimal in the form xx-xx-xx-xx. This is easily edited with any Hex editor, I used HxD.

If you don't know what to change in a Mii file use the Mii Data Specification to get the addresses. If you still don't know anything about using hex then use a mii creator that will allow you to set the Mii ID. Either MiiEditor.com or AJ's Mii Editor can be used.

Quick Mii ID guide

0x00000000 - 0x1FFFFFFF Creates Special Mii - Gold Pants
0x20000000 - 0x3FFFFFFF Creates Normal Mii - Black Pants
0x40000000 - 0x5FFFFFFF Creates Special Mii - Gold Pants
0x60000000 - 0xBFFFFFFF Creates Normal Mii - Black Pants
0xC0000000 - 0xDFFFFFFF Creates Foreign Mii - Blue Pants (uneditable)
0xE0000000 - 0xFFFFFFFF Creates Normal Mii - Black Pants

Gold Pants

These are actually called Special Mii's by nintendo so I will refer to them as that from now on.

After lots of testing I've isolated the Mii ID's that are responsible for making Special Mii's. Initially I discovered it by accident after using Senocular's Mii Editor.

So basically there are two sections of Mii ID's that will give you Special Miis. Special Miis are created by having a Mii ID from 00-00-00-00 through to 1F-FF-FF-FF, and also the Mii's with ID values from 40-00-00-00 through to 5F-FF-FF-FF.

But BEWARE! These are special Mii's, so you can't do everything you normally would with them. If you try to send your Special Miis to a friend you will get this message:

"When you send a Special Mii, it will leave your Mii Plaza. Also, if the friend you send it to already has a special Mii or doesn't use the Mii Channel, the special Mii you sent could vanish."

If you try to send the mii to your remote, it will not copy it to the wii remote, it will move it to your wii remote.

Also I discovered if you create two Identical Special Mii's, even having different names, and you already have one of them in the plaza, and you try to add another you get this message:

"The same Special Mii is already in your Mii Plaza, so this one can't be placed there."

This means the Wii must check to see if the features of your Mii are identical to any already in the plaza.

Foreign Mii's (Blue Pants)

You may have noticed that when your friend sends you Miis from their Wii the pants of the Mii are always Blue. This has got to do with the Wii Mac Code encoded in the Mii binary. Again if you don't know what that is then refer to the Mii Data Specification.

Basically if the Wii you're on was not where the Mii was created it will have Blue pants, these Mii's are Foreign Mii's.

But I have discovered that like the Special Mii's, Foreign Miis also have there own section of Mii ID's that means they will be given blue pants regardless of what Mii they were created on. So to create a Foreign Mii you can either change the Wii ID to something that is not yours, 00-00-00-00 works. Or create a Mii with Mii ID values in the range from C0-00-00-00 through to DF-FF-FF-FF.

BUT..there's always a but. I created a Mii that had a ID from the Foreign range, but with the Wii ID of my own Wii. So I thought I may have been able to edit the said Mii, but it turns out you cannot edit a Foreign mii even if it was supposed to have been created by your Wii. If you try to edit you just get the message saying you can't edit a Mii you didn't create.

Speculation UPDATE!

What were/are Nintendo planning to do with Special Miis? And why is it they are created so that you cannot copy them?

My guess is that Nintendo will one day be adding Miis to the Shop. Maybe they will release Celebrities, or game characters. The reason that why they can only be moved, is probably that they intend to sell them, or that they release limited edition Mii's.

There is also unkown data in a Mii binary file. I've tried experimenting with the unknown data to see if being a special mii 'unlocks' any new features, but I've not discovered anything yet. If anyone does, let me know.

UPDATE Nintendo Japan are starting to use these Special Miis! According to many game sites and this Nintendo page (Japanese) it is reported that they are releasing Celebrity Miis and sending them out to each person who is connected to Connect24. They also say that if you send to a friend it will dissapear, exactly the same as Special Miis. So When people start receiving these, I think they will find they are wearing gold pants.

In Game

Unfortunately none of the Mii's, Special or Foreign, have their coloured pants in game

Favourite Mii's (Red Pants)

It doesn't seem as if there is a section of the Mii ID's that gives the Mii red, or any other colour pants, but this could yet be discovered.
